VOLUNTEERS

Volunteer Program Overview
The Library welcomes volunteer help! We have some volunteers who have been assisting the Brentwood Library for more than 20 years, and others who stay just for a season. Volunteers should be at least 15 years of age (though younger children are welcome to volunteer along with a parent) and commit to at least two hours of service per week.

Volunteer Opportunities
A wide variety of tasks are performed by library volunteers. Some are short-term projects, and others are on-going. Among the choices are the following, listed by department.

Circulation Department

• Shelving books and AV materials

• Shelf-reading (straightening and organizing)

• Searching for overdue books

• Preparing overdue notice mailings

• Reorganizing newspapers and magazines

Children's Department

• Processing paperback additions

• Shelving

• Cutting out and assembling crafts

• Arranging magazines and displays

• Helping with Summer Reading Program events

• Helping with special events (Morning with Santa; Easter Egg Hunt)

Technical Services

• Mending damaged books

• Checking problem videos and tapes for damage

• Physical processing of books (stamping, labeling, etc.)

• Processing and organizing paperbacks

• Sorting donations for review by librarians

Reception Desk

• Answer questions and direct patrons to the Library Departments

• Serve as telephone receptionists

LIBRARY EMPLOYMENT

The library frequently has openings for part-time library technicians. This work often includes evening and weekend hours and involves shelving books and assisting patrons. Qualifications vary according to the specific position, and the starting wage is $9.74 per hour.

Applications for these positions may be obtained by inquiring at the library or at City Hall.

Full-time positions are available less frequently. Six of library's 12 full-time positions require a master's degree in library or information science. Openings are advertised in the local newspapers and posted on the web site of the City of Brentwood Department of Human Resources.
