PATRON FINDS SOLACE AND JOY AFTER TAKING LIBRARY CROCHET CLASS

Patron Julianne Fitz stopped by the library last fall to sign up for crochet classes. She mentioned that she needed to find something to keep her busy as she spends much of her time at home with her ailing son. She was apprehensive about actually picking up this skill but knew the fellowship this class would offer would be a very nice change of pace. Little did she know that a few weeks later she would find a passion for crocheting and the gift of giving!

Julianne stopped by recently to share her story with Program Coordinator Robyn Zandi:

Our son Ezra was diagnosed with brain cancer two years ago, and two special community resources that our family has turned to have been the Brentwood Library and Gilda's Club Nashville.

While a longtime library user and Friends of the Brentwood Library member, I have most recently enjoyed taking the crochet classes offered there this fall. I have found crocheting to be relaxing and lots of fun. For me, it's been a stress-reliever as our family copes with cancer.

I've made several scarves to give as gifts, but my real joy has been making and naming dishcloths for our friends at Gilda's Club--a free community resource for anyone with cancer and their families and friends. I've made red dishcloths that I call "Gilda's Door" and white and orange dishcloths that I call "Slice of Orange" after a beautiful Harold Kraus painting that hangs in Gilda's Clubhouse. Everyone's favorite seems to be the pink dishcloths that I started crocheting in October and dubbed "Wash for the Cure." I've been getting requests for those!

TEEN BOARD

The Teen Board recently welcomed the library’s newest staff member, Amanda Street, who has taken the job of Young Adult Program Coordinator. Amanda is originally from Kingston, Tenn., and a graduate of Berry College in Georgia. Her degree is in Sociology and her interests lie in working with young people. Amanda’s prior experience includes teaching, summer camp counseling, leading student teams in inner-city missions work, and working at her college library. Amanda and her husband recently moved to Nashville from Owenton, Kentucky, where they worked in youth ministry and taught in the local school system. She says, “I look forward to planning events with the Teen Advisory Board and I hope that together we can provide area teenagers with library services and programs they will be excited to use and attend.”

TEEN COFFEE HOUSE

Brentwood teenagers are invited to share their talents and watch their friends at the Library Teen Board’s Coffee House on Saturday, March 1st from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.  Teens are encouraged to share acoustic music performances, poetry and storytelling in an accepting and creative environment. This event will take place around the fireplace after library hours.

“Teens have so much to share,” says the library’s Teen Coordinator, Amanda Street. “Sometimes creative people feel like no one is interested in their words or music, and we want to change that.” For more information about the Coffee House, or to schedule your performance, contact Amanda Street at 371-0090 or ext. 811, or e-mail streeta@brentwood-tn.org
